Nice to meet you! I'm Grandpa. Thirty years teaching people to drive and I've never lost a watermelon.

The test and the language

In Texas, Florida and Illinois the test is now English-only

And the skills test is in English in every state, with no interpreters. That's why Grandpa explains in plain words and has you practice in test English.

Bridge mode 🌉

Learn in Spanish, practice in English

From the welcome screen, the CDL course suggests bridge mode: Grandpa explains each topic in Spanish and the questions come in English, just like the real test. Stuck on one? See it in Spanish.

Per the official Texas DPS, FLHSMV and Illinois SOS pages, October 2026. Other states (for example New York, New Jersey, Washington and Colorado) still offer the written test in Spanish, except hazmat. The federal government has announced English-only CDL testing, but as of October 2026 no rule has been published. Rules change: check with your licensing office.

Two things you should know

Check that you qualify before you pay

Since March 16, 2026, the federal rule only allows a non-domiciled CDL for foreign nationals with a valid H-2A, H-2B or E-2 visa. A work permit, DACA, asylum or TPS is no longer enough. Citizens and permanent residents get a regular CDL. The rule is being challenged in court and may change; this is not legal advice.

The app doesn't replace ELDT

It prepares you for the permit's written tests. Before the Class A or B skills test (and the P and S endorsements), and before the hazmat written test, federal law requires Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) from a provider registered with FMCSA.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can I take the CDL written test in Spanish?

It depends on the state. Per the official pages (October 2026), Texas, Florida and Illinois are now English-only; New York, New Jersey, Washington and Colorado still offer it in Spanish, except the hazmat test. The skills test is in English everywhere. Check with your licensing office.

How many questions are on the CDL test?

Federal rules require 80% on each written test. The most common format is General Knowledge 50 questions, Air Brakes 25, Hazmat 30 and the other endorsements 20. Illinois uses 30 for General Knowledge. It varies by state.

What do I need for a CLP permit?

You must be 18 or older, hold a regular driver's license from the same state and pass the General Knowledge written test, plus the tests for any endorsements you want on the permit. To drive across state lines you must be 21 and have a DOT medical certificate.
